Welcome to Horsfords
Growing Fields
We are dedicated to growing timeless plants like crabapples and lilacs, as well as cherished native species like oak and maple, on 40 acres of growing fields. Visit in spring for awaited blossoms, in summer for prolific flora, and in fall for spectacular foliage. If you see a tree or shrub in our fields that would be perfect for your property, one of our team members will be happy to tag it for you. Our field crew will dig it at the appropriate time of year.
We dig hundreds of plants each spring and fall, and nearly all of the balled and burlapped plants around the nursery are dug from our fields.
Display Gardens
When visiting the nursery, be sure to allow plenty of time to enjoy a stroll through our many display gardens, located all over the property. Draw advice from our Rock Garden, Rain Garden, Shade Perennial Garden, Sun Perennial Garden, and hedges for your own property’s needs. See our takes on classics in the Rose Garden and Pondside Peony Planting. Or find inspiration for something completely new within our Cut Flower Garden, Annual Gardens, Spring Bulb Display, Pollinator Garden, or Circle Gardens. Many perennials, shrubs, trees and annuals are shown off, so you can envision what it would be like to bring each plant home.
Additionally, we have growing beds for propagating and testing.
Greenhouses
Customers visit our greenhouses from quite far to explore our famously unique selection of annual plants. We grow annual flowers, kitchen herbs, and vegetable plants with the help of beneficial insects and integrated pest management.
Unlike the disposable plastic greenhouses of today, glass allows summer heat and winter cold to break pest cycles. That’s why we restored two antique Lord & Burnham glass greenhouses, to expand growing potential in grand tradition. We connected these houses using the glass and cypress beams from the original Horsford greenhouses dating back to the late 1800s.
Shop from hundreds of varieties of hardy, reliable perennials. We grow hard-to-find selections, important natives, and superb collections of classics. Explore the colorful rows to find: ornamental grasses, pollinator favorites, groundcovers, flowers for cutting, shade-lovers, and more.
Shrubs are versatile in privacy plantings, pollinator hedgerows, flowering borders, and as celebrated specimens. We grow a diverse variety of evergreen and deciduous species for all preferences and sites, and are especially proud of our vast native shrub selection.
