Persimmon is native to New England and commonly found throughout the eastern U.S. It is a very adaptable pioneer species, which prospers in wet or dry, sand or clay, and acidic or basic soils as long as it gets good sunlight. Small yellow flowers are followed by the namesake fruit, which resembles an orange tomato. Fruit is edible once cold weather tempers the astringency. Can form thickets via root suckers. Great tree for wildlife.
