Field Manager Position

Field Manager

Fulltime – Seasonal – Long-term

Reports to: Nursery Owner

Wage: $25-$30/hour – Depending on experience

The Field Manager at Horsford Gardens and Nursery oversees the planting, caring for, digging, and ordering of about 20 acres of in-ground trees and shrubs. Additionally, they are in charge of field irrigation and soil care, including weed control, cover crops, and cultivating. The Field Manager will oversee and be working with two crew members.

Beginning in late March or early April, the crew heads out to Horsford’s growing fields to dig the trees and shrubs that will be sold at the nursery that season. Most digging is completed by hand. Large trees are dug with a tree spade. A crew of six will dig up to a hundred plants in a day.

After digging is complete, we prepare the fields for replanting, plant hundreds of trees and shrubs, seed cover crops, harrow and mow the fields, and constantly monitor watering newly planted trees and shrubs. The field crew works outside in all weather conditions. Other tasks include helping the nursery load and unload trucks.

The Field Manager is responsible for planning, conducting, overseeing the processes above, as well as conducting twice yearly major inventory checks. The Field Manager must make suggestions about what is grown in the fields, based on both purchasing trends and crop success. This position works with their crew as well as other managers, who meet on a weekly basis.
