A native edible that does well in a variety of conditions. Fruits resemble blueberries in appearance and flavor but usually ripen later in the wild. Pinkish flowers in spring are small but ornamental and the berries that follow are quickly consumed by wildlife. Fall foliage is typically quite impressive. This plant spreads by rhizomes to form a small colony. Good for bank stabilization and filling in spaces between other plants. Tolerant of sandy soils and prefers acidic conditions.
