An attractive native shrub with yellow flowers in late April followed by ornamental glossy red fruit which is edible but best left for the birds. Foliage and twigs have a spicy fragrance when crushed or broken. Thrives in moist, woodsy locations. Good for the border or naturalizing. Exclusive host for the lovely spicebush swallowtail butterfly. Fall foliage is a delightful bright yellow that contrasts nicely with the red berries. Spicebush is dioecious — meaning there are male and female flowers on separate plants.
