This native species has a long Vermont history. The fast-growing red spruce is shade-tolerant and soils-tolerant (growing in thin, nutrient-poor rocky soils). It’s estimated to serve local organisms its whole life, which can be over a hundred years, and has a refreshing visual appeal in its bark, foliage, and cones.
