Hop-tree is essentially unknown despite being native to the entire eastern half of the U.S., and the hardiest member of the citrus family. What this handsome plant lacks in flashy ornamental features, it makes up for with utilitarian toughness. Very adaptable to various soils and environmental conditions, plus it's not bothered by deer. Can be grown as a large shrub or a small tree. Larval host for multiple butterflies including the giant swallowtail.
