Single cup-shade blooms in deep shades of mahogany that look almost like black velvet in color and texture.  Great backdrop or vertical interest in a cottage garden or along fences, as the sturdy spikes can reach an impressive 10 feet in height. Tolerant of many soil conditions including chalk loam or sand, as long as kept moist but not water logged. Grown as short lived perennial or biennial.
