This drought tolerant, deer-resistant shrub is the only one native to all U.S. states, usually appearing after a disturbance with all the tools for support. Its spreading habit provides erosion control and screening, the yellow summer flowers lend nectar for pollinators, and the red drupes that follow feed local birds or the grazing human. It also exhibits a show of red, orange, and yellow in the fall.
